Best time to see tonight's meteor shower in the UK visible with the naked eye

Updated: Nov 11

Get ready to make a wish everyone, as you might spot a shooting star before heading to bed tonight!

That’s right, there’ll be a meteor shower in the UK tonight (11 November) that you can see with just your eyes.

The Northern Taurids will reach their peak overnight, having been active since October. This meteor shower happens as Earth passes through debris left by Comet Encke.

It’s a slow-moving shower, but it does produce some really bright meteors, so you might catch one of those magical ‘shooting stars’.

The shower is so slow that it only produces about five meteors an hour, but with clear weather expected tonight, you might get lucky.

To catch a meteor shower, you need a clear view of the sky, with no clouds to block your sight.

Most of the UK should have decent skies tonight, though fog might disrupt the view in some areas, especially across north Wales, northwest England, southern Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

For the best chance of seeing the Northern Taurid meteor shower, head somewhere with dark skies, a clear horizon, and minimal light pollution. Basically, avoid cities if you can.

The good news is that you won’t need any binoculars or a telescope; your eyes should do the job just fine.

However, it helps to go out a bit early and let your eyes adjust to the darkness for about half an hour.

As for the best time to watch, aim for around midnight tonight.

That’s because around that time, the shower’s radiant (the point in the sky where the meteors appear to come from), in the Taurus constellation, is high in the sky.

These shooting stars can appear all across the sky, so keep moving your eyes around nearby constellations to spot as many as possible.

If staying up late tonight doesn’t work for you, don’t worry—the Leonid meteor shower will peak next week on 18 November.

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
