Locals in Manchester horrified after river turns to foam

People in a town in Greater Manchester were shocked yesterday when their river suddenly filled with foam.

Streets and cars near the River Tame in Dukinfield were covered in white, soapy bubbles, which were blown from the river by the wind.

Photos showed foam floating down the river, with concerns raised about pollution possibly coming from local chemical plants. Nearby roads were blanketed with foam, and a video clip showed large chunks of it being blown onto vehicles.

Officials have started looking into what might have caused the strange substance.

Professor Jamie Woodward, a geography professor at the University of Manchester, called the situation "upsetting."

He commented: "This is how we’re treating our important rivers."

Local resident Sam Pedder filmed the scene. He said: "This is unbelievable. In all the 34 years I’ve lived near the River Tame in Dukinfield, I’ve never seen it this bad.

"Something must have been dumped into the river further upstream, causing this awful mess."

A spokesperson from the Environment Agency said: "We’re grateful to the public for reporting the foam near the River Tame in Dukinfield, Tameside.

"Officers from the Environment Agency are currently at the site investigating the source of the foam and looking into any potential environmental damage."
