Northern Lights to be visible in the UK thanks to a huge coronal mass ejection

If you were unfortunate enough to miss the Northern Lights over the weekend, then don't worry, as there may be another chance to catch the natural wonder tonight!

The experts at the Met Office say that people across the majority of the UK will be able to witness the colourful light display tonight.

The lights are caused by the interaction between the charged particles from a 'coronal mass ejection' which is a violent expulsion from the sun, with atoms in the Earth's upper atmosphere.

If you live as far south as Belfast, Isle of Man and Newcastle, you'll be lucky enough to see the display by looking northwards after nightfall, and it should be visible outside of the UK too!

However, those who are too far south might be able to capture the streams of light with their smartphone camera, even if they can't see it themselves!

According to the UK's Met Office, those with a decent camera should be able to capture shots of the fascinating aurora even when it's not visible with the naked eye.

Just look north if you're in the Northern hemisphere (or look south if you're in the southern hemisphere) and set up your camera likewise! The light showing will be between 11pm and 2am Tuesday morning.

So, will you be looking out for the Northern Lights tonight?
