When planning a holiday, one of the biggest questions is whether to choose a beach break to relax by the sea or a cultural trip filled with history, landmarks and local charm.
While most destinations offer one or the other, there’s a small town in North Wales that gives you both, and it’s a hidden gem many people haven’t even heard of.
Staycations in North Wales have become more popular than ever, with visitors now looking for more than just sand and sea views.
Travellers want places where they can enjoy peaceful beach walks before uncovering centuries of fascinating history just a short distance away.
This part of the Welsh coast offers dramatic cliffs, quiet bays and peaceful promenades, while further inland rolling hills and ancient castles rise beneath the shadow of Snowdonia.
From the rugged coves of the Llŷn Peninsula to mountain views that stretch for miles, it’s the perfect mix of sea air, storytelling and local legends all in one trip.
Criccieth is one of the best places to experience it all. Sitting along Cardigan Bay, this charming seaside town offers sweeping coastal views on one side and striking mountains on the other.
It’s so picturesque that it’s often called the “Pearl of Wales on the Shores of Snowdonia.”
Overlooking the beach is Criccieth Castle, a striking 13th-century fortress that dominates the skyline.
The castle was built by Llywelyn the Great and later strengthened by Edward I more than 800 years ago.
It sits between two beaches, one sandy and family-friendly, the other pebbly and peaceful with stunning mountain views.
For those wanting to explore even more history, a short drive takes you to St Cybi’s Well, a centuries-old holy site said to have healing powers.
Some believe its origins go back to ancient times, long before Christianity reached Wales.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
