Sitting on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales and only a short distance from the Lancashire border, the market town of Skipton is bursting with charm and history. Its most famous landmark is the impressive Skipton Castle, which proudly stands at the top of the high street.

At over 900 years old, it’s one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Britain, still showcasing many of its original features.

Step through the grand gatehouse and you can explore every corner of the castle, from the grand Banqueting Hall to the dark, atmospheric dungeon, according to the Manchester Evening News.

During the English Civil War, the castle survived a two-year siege that began in 1643. A recently discovered well revealed how defenders managed to hold out for so long.

Thankfully, modern visitors can take a gentler break at the on-site tearoom, perfect for a hot drink and something sweet.

Below the castle lies Skipton Castle Woods, which is looked after by the Woodland Trust.

Entry is free, and the ancient woodland is especially beautiful in autumn when the trees turn shades of red, gold and orange. There are walking trails for all abilities, from gentle strolls to more challenging routes.

While Skipton’s medieval castle draws much of the attention, the town’s more recent history is just as fascinating. During the Industrial Revolution, Skipton grew rapidly thanks to the creation of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, which played a major role in local trade.

The canal was once busy with boats carrying wool, coal and limestone, but today it’s a peaceful spot where visitors can enjoy relaxing cruises and take in a different view of the town.

Right beside the canal is The Boat House Bar, a lovely pub with stunning waterside views. It’s also one of the stops on the Skipton Ale Trail, a route featuring 18 local pubs where you can sample a range of locally brewed beers and ales.

Other highlights on the trail include The Castle, a characterful former coaching inn from the 1800s, and the Grade II-listed Black Horse pub, which first opened its doors in 1676 and still welcomes visitors looking for a taste of Skipton’s long history.

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
