There’s something truly special about the English countryside in autumn, when the leaves turn golden and the air feels crisp and fresh.
While many people visit during summer, this season offers a calmer, cosier experience.
One particular town, with its cobbled streets and welcoming pubs, might just be the perfect spot for a relaxing countryside escape.
Hidden among Somerset’s rolling hills lies the small market town of Bruton, which has recently gained international attention.
Named by Condé Nast Traveller as one of the best places to visit in the UK this autumn, this peaceful West Country gem has all the charm you’d expect from rural Britain.
Once a quiet stop between Bath, Bristol and the Dorset coast, Bruton, with its population of just 3,000, has transformed into a tranquil destination filled with friendly locals, great food and plenty of cosy pubs.
Wander through the town’s historic stone streets and you’ll find traditional cottages, welcoming inns and a laid-back atmosphere.
But this is Somerset, and here the locals are known for something even more special than their hospitality, their cider. This is the heart of apple country, and autumn brings with it the joy of apple picking and pressing, making Bruton a paradise for cider enthusiasts.
As Condé Nast explained: “When South African Koos Bekker and his wife Karen Roos turned Hadspen House into The Newt in Somerset, planting 267 types of apple trees, it was destined to become a hub for cider, or cyder, as it’s known here.”
For visitors who love a good walk, the River Brue offers a peaceful path through the countryside, while Bruton’s High Street is lined with independent boutiques and artisan cafés.
You can stop for a hot drink, browse the shops or enjoy a local cider in one of the town’s friendly spots.
Bruton’s pubs and restaurants proudly showcase Somerset’s seasonal produce, from hearty homemade stews to creamy local cheeses, not surprising, with Cheddar Gorge just a short drive away.
And of course, no meal here is complete without a slice of apple crumble made from freshly picked fruit.
Those eager to explore more of the area will find nearby villages like Castle Cary and Batcombe just as charming, each offering postcard-perfect views and a warm country welcome.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
