Devon is one of the most popular places in the UK to go on holiday. The area has loads to see, like sandy beaches, fossil-covered cliffs and old towns, but there’s one place you really shouldn’t miss.
If you're after a short trip, driving is the easiest way to enjoy what Devon has to offer, especially in the South, where there are loads of pretty coves and beaches to find.
This beautiful part of the UK has golden beaches, rocky cliffs, ancient towns, wide open moorlands and the lovely English Riviera.
Every part of Devon is great to visit, but there’s one area that people travelling by car really shouldn’t skip.
Slapton is a village and parish in the South Hams area of Devon. It sits near the A379 road between Kingsbridge and Dartmouth, right in the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The seaside village has Slapton Ley Nature Reserve and two beaches, which are split by a single road.
The most eye-catching thing about Slapton is the road between Dartmouth and Kingsbridge, which runs between two very different landscapes.
On one side, there’s Slapton Ley, the biggest natural freshwater lake in the South West. It’s one and a half miles long and covers over 490 acres of woodland, marshes and reedbeds.
It’s full of different animals, bugs and plants, so it’s perfect for families, nature fans and wildlife watchers. If you like walking, there are several looped trails to enjoy nearby.
On the other side, you’ll find Slapton Sands, a long pebble beach that stretches for nearly two miles from Strete Gate to the village of Torcross.
The ridge next to Slapton Ley was made when the sea moved back at the end of the last ice age, around 10,000 years ago. As the ice melted, the sea pushed stones into a ridge over about 3,000 years, blocking the River Gara and forming the lake behind it.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
