Secret Yorkshire beach with barely any visitors only 10 minutes from a busy tourist hotspot

Whitby is known as one of the UK’s most scenic seaside towns, drawing visitors in every season.

But if you are looking for somewhere quieter and more tucked away for your holiday, this hidden gem could be the perfect choice.

Just 1.8 miles from Whitby, or around a 10-minute drive, it is a little-known beach that stays far less crowded.

Arrive early and you might even have the bay to yourself. This hidden spot is an ideal escape for those wanting something different.

The Yorkshire bay is a stunning sight, with golden sand, blue water and plenty of fossils waiting to be discovered.

At low tide you can also see the wrecks of the Admiral Von Tromp and the SS Rohilla hospital ship, along with the remains of the SS Brentwood.

It’s a fascinating place for both history lovers and adventurers, reports the Express. Here you can find ammonites, belemnites and even Whitby Jet, a gemstone formed from fossilised trees. You may also spot dinosaur footprints set in the rocks.

Saltwick Bay’s beauty, peacefulness and dramatic views are sure to win over visitors of all ages.

The cliffs above the beach also hold reptile fossils, found about a metre above the sand.

A stroll along the bay may reveal ammonites, the spiral-shelled fossils that once lived in the sea.

But it is important to remember that Saltwick Bay is a protected site, so breaking rocks with hammers is not allowed.

The wreck of the Admiral Von Tromp still lies on the shore, adding to the mystery of the bay. The vessel set out from Scarborough Harbour in 1976 bound for Barnacle Bay but never arrived.

Instead, it ran aground on the rocks of Saltwick Bay. The wreck can still be seen at low tide, so visitors should plan their trip carefully if they want to catch a glimpse of this haunting piece of history.

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
