Walker injured at Peak District waterfall as rescuers delayed by bad parking

Glossop Mountain Rescue Team were called to reports of a walker who had fallen and suffered a serious head injury at Middle Black Clough, a hidden gem waterfall in the Peak District.

Because of the difficult terrain and the risk of severe injuries, both an air ambulance and a coastguard helicopter were sent to help at the scene.

When medics from the air ambulance arrived, they were surprised to find the casualty in much better condition than expected, despite the length of the fall.

Rescue teams were able to assist the injured walker to the roadside, where paramedics from a land ambulance carried out further checks before taking him to hospital for ongoing care.

A spokesperson for Glossop Mountain Rescue Team (GMRT) said: “We want to thank our colleagues at North West Air Ambulance and the Coastguard for their quick response in what first seemed like a very complex rescue.”

They added: “We also appreciate the support of Woodhead Mountain Rescue, who were later stood down once it became clear the situation was less serious than we first thought.”

However, the rescue team has since launched a plea to drivers after badly parked cars blocked access to the site, slowing down the emergency response.

A spokesperson for GMRT said: “If you’re planning a trip to the Black Clough waterfalls, please park with care. Last night, our vehicles were delayed because of obstructive parking.”

They added: “Leaving clear access is vital – it can make the difference in a life-threatening emergency. If parking is tight, try using other transport or visit at quieter times. Your help keeps everyone safe.”

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
