When your travel plans don’t take you abroad, some of the most beautiful places to explore can actually be found right here at home.
In recent years, staycations have become more popular than ever, and it’s easy to see why the Cotswolds often tops the list.
The area is famous for its honey-coloured stone cottages, peaceful lanes, and gently rolling hills dotted with grazing sheep.
Recognised as an official Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Cotswolds offers the perfect escape from city life and a chance to switch off from screens and stress.
But with its growing fame, many of the best-known villages like Castle Combe, Bibury and Bourton-on-the-Water can get crowded with tourists and day-trippers.
For a quieter, more authentic taste of Cotswold life, there’s one small village that feels like stepping back in time, while still keeping a touch of comfort and charm.
There’s something magical about staying somewhere off the beaten track, where only a few locals and farm animals pass by, and you can relax beside a roaring fire with a cup of tea or something stronger in hand.
That’s exactly what you’ll find in Stanton, a small village tucked into the Cotswold hills of Gloucestershire.
Often called “outstandingly beautiful”, it’s built almost entirely from golden Cotswold stone, with cottages that look much the same as they did hundreds of years ago. You won’t find big crowds or busy shops here, just peace, history and charm.
Inside the village’s ancient church, St Michael & All Angels, there’s a fascinating treasure to discover.
Medieval wall paintings dating back to the 14th century still decorate the interior, and even the pews bear marks from shepherds who once tied their dogs there.
The countryside surrounding Stanton is perfect for long walks and scenic trails, while the village also makes an ideal base for exploring nearby Cotswold towns and attractions.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
