North West trail with a ‘magical’ waterfall crowned the best walk in the UK

Updated: Sep 24, 2025

A walk in the Lake District that includes a breathtaking waterfall has been named the best hike in the UK, according to a new study.

Close to Ullswater, this place is a classic example of a Victorian park, complete with waterfalls, an arboretum and rock gardens.

Its main waterfall drops 70 feet beneath a stone bridge, creating a dramatic and unforgettable view.

The park has received hundreds of glowing five-star reviews on Tripadvisor. One visitor from Bolton described it as a “must visit”, while another said it was a “lovely walk”. Another visitor summed it up in one word, “magical”.

The study was carried out by experts at Live Football Tickets, who ranked the UK’s best hikes by looking at walk ratings, length, elevation, estimated completion time, number of attractions along the way, and any obstacles on the route.

Second place went to another Lake District favourite, the Buttermere Circular.

This walk takes you along the shores of one of the smallest lakes in the park, surrounded by towering fells.

Researchers said: “It’s a great choice for enjoying the stunning reflections of the mountains in the still waters of Buttermere.

There’s also a farmhouse café just a few minutes off the route, serving local food and drink.”

Third place went to a hike in Dartmoor, while two more Lake District trails – Little Langdale and Elterwater, plus Wordsworth’s Grasmere and Rydal, completed the top five.

The Peak District also had three routes in the top ten: Padley Gorge, Teggs Nose with Ridgegate and Trentabank Reservoirs, and Langsett Reservoir with the Little Don River.

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
