Walk through the small streets of this lovely Yorkshire town and you will soon feel surrounded by the influence of writers and artists who helped shape it during the 1970s and 1980s.
Set between Halifax and Todmorden, this hidden gem is known for its free spirited feel.
It is also a popular place for commuters who work in bigger cities like Manchester and Leeds, bringing in a mix of people that makes it different from many other Yorkshire towns.
Because of this, the town is filled with pavement cafes, great places to eat, art galleries and characterful homes, all showing off its creative side.
This artistic energy has become part of everyday life and continues to attract like minded people.
The 2021 census showed that a large number of residents identify as LGBTQ+, which has led to Hebden Bridge being known by some as the UK’s lesbian capital.
In the 1970s, the closure of local mills and low house prices encouraged artists and campaigners to move into the area.
These new residents quickly built a strong and supportive community, turning the town into a place where people from all walks of life could be themselves. This mix of cultures, identities and creativity is still very much alive today.

Staying true to this welcoming spirit, Hebden Bridge hosts many community events throughout the year, including Happy Valley Pride and a wide range of social groups.
The town is also home to several well loved meeting places, such as the Trades Club, Nelson’s Wine Bar and the Birchcliffe Centre, which all play an important role in community life.
Another popular feature is Hebden Bridge Open Market, a small but lively market with around 40 stalls in Lees Yard.
Shoppers can find second hand items, local food and handmade products. The market runs from Thursday to Sunday between 9am and 4pm.
Being in Yorkshire, the countryside is never far away, and just outside the town you will find woodland and wide stretches of purple heather moorland.
Hardcastle Crags is especially popular with both locals and visitors, offering peaceful walks through beautiful scenery.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
