The perfect UK getaway for cheese lovers with waterfalls and woodland walks

Tucked away beside the upper stretches of the River Ure, this lovely village is a perfect spot for people who enjoy good food and peaceful surroundings.

While many people instantly think of Wensleydale cheese, this charming Yorkshire village has much more to offer visitors than just its famous food.

Interestingly, it is one of the few dales that is not named after its river. Instead, it takes its name from the historic market town of Wensley.

The village sits within the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park and is home to the famous Wensleydale Creamery, found in the Hawes area.

Visitors can enjoy the popular Flagship Cheese Experience and Visitor Centre, which celebrates almost 1,000 years of traditional cheese making.

The cheese recipes have been carefully passed down through generations and use fresh local milk, following methods that began when Cistercian monks first brought cheese making to the area.

The wide open valley, shaped by glaciers long ago, and the flowing river create perfect land for dairy farming and grazing cows.

One recent visitor described their trip to the creamery as a “cheese lover’s dream”. They said: “The cheese is amazing, and you can try so many different types in both the tasting room and the cafe.”

They added: “We especially loved the classic Wensleydale cheeses mixed with dried fruits like apricots, blueberries and cranberries.

Next time we would definitely book the full cheese experience and eat in the restaurant as well.”

The special landscape of Wensleydale is what helped create the famous cheese that is loved across the UK, and the area’s natural beauty continues to shape daily life here.

One of the area’s most impressive sights is Aysgarth Falls, a stunning natural attraction that draws many walkers and nature lovers. A recent visitor described it as “beautiful, untouched and not spoiled by crowds.”

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
