Scenic seaside village praised as one of the top spots for a ‘winter getaway’

A pretty coastal village in Pembrokeshire has been named the best place in Wales for a “winter getaway”.

This place, found on the south side of the St Davids Peninsula, has been called a “hidden treasure” by National Rail.

The company revealed a list of the UK’s “prettiest” winter villages, and it took the top spot in Wales thanks to its “standout attractions and experiences”, from its famous woollen mill to its scenic walking routes.

Solva is most famous for its harbour, but the village also has plenty of restaurants, pubs, and small shops for visitors to enjoy.

When the tide is high, the beach at Solva Harbour becomes a narrow strip of sand, but when the tide goes out, the whole harbour turns dry.

A little stream runs through the centre, which gives children “hours of entertainment catching fish, shrimps, and crabs”, according to Visit Pembrokeshire.

For those who love an adventure, jumping from the edge of the Solva harbour wall into the water is a popular thrill.

Visitors can also follow the coast path along Y Gribin for incredible views, or wander round the headland to reach the peaceful Gwadn Beach.

Anyone with an interest in history will enjoy the Solva Woollen Mill. Back in 1900, Pembrokeshire had 26 working woollen mills, but now only two remain, and Solva’s is the oldest.

Here, visitors can watch the looms in action and browse rugs and traditional Welsh textiles.

One visitor wrote on TripAdvisor: “Possibly one of the prettiest places on earth! Come an hour before high tide and bring your crab bucket and wetsuit!”

Another described Solva as “heaven on earth”, adding: “It’s so beautiful. Visited at high and low tide and both stunning in different ways.”

A third said: “Lovely area with amazing scenery and a lovely little beach area. A couple of pubs to try and some shops along the main street.” Someone else posted: “I love Solva. It has such charm.

The places to eat are great and it’s lovely to sit with a coffee and relax. It’s a gentle walk on the beach out to the sea.”

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
