The charming Scottish town is famous for its sweeping views of a historic bay and its striking viaduct that looks out across the Moray coast.
One of Scotland’s prettiest villages has been named among the best places to live in 2025, and it also hides Jacobite secrets that will excite Outlander fans.
This hidden gem in Moray, is home to around 1,400 people. Perched along the North Sea coast, it has become a favourite summer destination for visitors.
It was one of three Scottish spots chosen by the Sunday Times in their latest list, alongside East Neuk in Fife and Portobello in Edinburgh.
Cullen is also the birthplace of the famous Scottish dish Cullen Skink, a hearty soup made with smoked haddock, potatoes and onions, which is still served proudly in local cafés and restaurants.
The town is most recognised for its viaduct and beautiful bay, but its links to the Jacobite past add another layer of intrigue for history lovers and Outlander fans alike.
Cullen House was raided during the 1745 Jacobite uprising, the same rebellion that ended at the Battle of Culloden and shaped the backdrop of Claire and Jamie’s story in Outlander.
When the fifth Earl of Findlater, James Ogilvy, and his wife were away in Aberdeen seeking help from Hanoverian allies, rebels broke into the estate.
Valuables were stolen, rooms were wrecked and the family’s possessions were taken. The Earl later asked parliament for £8,000 in compensation for the huge losses.
The event mirrored the famous siege of Culloden House, where 200 Jacobite clansmen tried, but failed, to capture Lord Duncan Forbes. A year later, Bonnie Prince Charlie turned Culloden House into his headquarters ahead of the Jacobite defeat.
For the TV series, Outlander used Touch House in Stirling to recreate scenes at Culloden House, giving fans a glimpse into this dramatic part of Scottish history.
