One lovely seaside town has made a name for itself as one of the best places to visit, thanks to its peaceful beach that’s never overcrowded. It’s also home to the award-winning “Pier of the Year”.
Planning a holiday abroad this summer can be tricky. Flights are pricey, airport trips take ages, and hotels in places like France can cost a lot. That’s why more people are choosing to explore the UK instead, and finding some real gems.
If you’re after a brilliant staycation spot, head east to the Norfolk coast for a great mix of beach, views and charm.
Norfolk is packed with amazing seaside places. Holkham has miles of beach, and Wells-next-the-Sea has a huge quay. But it’s Cromer, a larger town in north Norfolk, that’s really getting attention. Many know it for its tasty crabs, but it has plenty more to offer.
Cromer sits high on a cliff, surrounded by trees and countryside, giving visitors amazing views out across the North Sea.
Right in the centre of the town is Cromer’s famous Victorian pier. It’s a fun place to visit, where you can catch a show at the Pavilion Theatre, play in the arcade or simply enjoy a walk along the pier. You might even recognise it from the Alan Partridge film Alpha Papa.
The pier is so special that it was named “Pier of the Year” by the National Piers Society. It won because people love visiting it, it’s been really well looked after, and the views from it are amazing.
If you enjoy reading, you might remember a line from Jane Austen’s book Emma, where it says: “You should have gone to Cromer… the best of all the sea bathing places. A fine open sea… and very pure air.”
Even Arthur Conan Doyle, who wrote the Sherlock Holmes stories, got inspired by Cromer’s legends. The tale of the ghostly dog Black Shuck helped him come up with one of his most famous books, The Hound of the Baskervilles.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
