Small city named among the best for its high street and pubs, and it’s not York or Cambridge

When people in Britain think of beautiful old shopping streets, their minds often go to Oxford’s cobbled lanes, York’s famous Shambles, or the elegant crescents of Bath.

But Lincoln has its own hidden gem: a charming street tucked away in the city’s Cathedral Quarter, full of history and life.

Sitting proudly at the top of the well-known Steep Hill, this hidden gem connects two of Lincoln’s most iconic landmarks, the grand Gothic Cathedral and the ancient Roman-built Newport Arch.

The street follows much of the same route that the Romans once walked when they first settled in the area around 50AD.

Even today, you can still spot signs of the city’s Roman past. The old forum once stood at the junction of Bailgate and Westgate, and markings in the pavement show where the original walls and buildings once stood.

This deep and fascinating history has given Bailgate a unique character that few other places can match.

After the Norman Conquest, William the Conqueror ordered the building of Lincoln Castle just a short distance away. The nearby land became known as the “outer bail”, which is how Bailgate got its name.

In medieval times, the area thrived with busy markets, traders, taverns and wealthy residents. Many of the wooden-framed houses from that era are still standing and admired by visitors today.

During the Victorian and Edwardian eras, Bailgate continued to grow, adding more shops, pubs and businesses that made it one of Lincoln’s key shopping spots.

Unlike many high streets filled with big-name brands, Bailgate proudly remains a place of independent spirit.

Every few steps reveal something special, a boutique, antique shop, deli or gallery, each run by locals who bring warmth and personality to the street.

Fashion lovers can browse ethical styles at Pretty Little Clothing or find standout outfits at Oska and Self.

Those who enjoy crafts will love the colourful fabrics at the Fabric Quarter, while art fans visit The Little Red Gallery and readers adore Lindum Books, a true Lincoln treasure.

If you’re after something quirky, the antique shops are packed with wonders. Spots like Mansion Antiques and The Shambles are filled with vintage jewellery, rare finds and one-of-a-kind furniture waiting to be discovered.

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
