World’s quickest flight takes passengers on a journey lasting only 53 seconds

The world’s shortest flight is a tiny two-mile journey between two islands in the UK, which has now become a popular attraction for visitors.

This record-breaking flight covers just 1.7 miles, with passengers spending around 90 seconds in the air from take-off to landing.

However, the route, run by LoganAir, can sometimes be completed in as little as 53 seconds, meaning travellers are seated for less than a minute.

The flight links Westray and Papa Westray, one of the smallest islands in Orkney, Scotland. With so many islands scattered across the area, the only way for locals and tourists to get around is by air or by sea.

Although ferries operate between the Orkney Islands, they can be slow and often depend on the weather.

The flight offers a much quicker and more convenient option for anyone needing to travel between the two islands.

LoganAir said: “Experience the world’s shortest scheduled flight between Westray and Papa Westray!

Lasting just under two minutes, this short hop over the Orkney Islands is a must for aviation fans and curious travellers alike. Take in breathtaking aerial views and enjoy a journey that’s as quick as it is unforgettable.”

LoganAir has also shared that the world’s shortest scheduled flight has become one of Orkney’s most loved tourist experiences.

Normally, such a small route would cost a fortune to run, especially with only a few passengers taking it each day.

Thankfully, the flights between Westray and Papa Westray are supported by the UK Public Service Obligation Scheme, which helps keep them affordable.

Because of this, only a small amount of LoganAir’s income from the route comes from ticket sales. Prices remain low, with one-way fares starting at around £17 and return tickets costing roughly £29.

LoganAir has recently renewed its contract for another four years, starting in April 2025.

This means the airline will keep running the world’s shortest flight until at least 31 March 2029, ensuring this tiny but iconic journey continues to delight travellers for years to come.

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
