A “stunning” beach in a charming seaside village has been named one of the best in the UK for winter walks.
This beach, just two miles from Lyme Regis along the Jurassic Coast, is famous for its fascinating fossils and attracts visitors throughout the year.
It was even listed by Lonely Planet as one of the world’s top beaches to visit in winter, as well as being recognised by Contours Holidays as one of the best beaches in Britain for a cold-weather stroll.

Charmouth Beach is split into two main sections: East Beach and West Beach. East Beach is more popular with families who come to relax on the smaller pebbles, while West Beach is well known as one of the best spots for fossil hunting in the area.
The village of Charmouth lies within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is filled with welcoming pubs, cosy cafés, little shops, and even a traditional bakery.
The Charmouth Heritage Centre showcases fossil displays, gives expert advice, and runs guided fossil-hunting walks along the beach.
According to Visit Dorset, there are no lifeguards on duty at Charmouth Beach.
However, it does have public toilets, including accessible facilities, and a promenade suitable for wheelchairs. Visitors driving to the beach will find three car parks within easy walking distance.
Dogs are welcome off-lead all year round on East Beach, while on West Beach they can be off-lead from October to April but are restricted from May to September.
Visitors often praise Charmouth Beach for its incredible views and natural beauty, even during the colder months.
One reviewer described it as “fabulous”, writing: “This is a must-see for everyone. The beach is amazing – dogs are welcome, and there’s endless fossil hunting to enjoy as well as plenty of space to relax.”
Another visitor shared: “It’s best to go in autumn or winter during term time. There are more fossils to find, it’s quieter, and the light is just beautiful. The beach looks different every time I visit – it’s perfect for a long walk.”
A third review read: “I’ve been coming to Charmouth Beach for years, and it never disappoints, even in winter. It’s great for swimming, rock-pooling and fossil hunting. There’s plenty to do for both kids and adults.”

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
