This amazing coastal walk on a Welsh peninsula takes you right past a pub that’s been named one of the best in the world.
The coastline could have looked very different if plans from the early 1800s to build a new port there had actually happened.
This hidden gem is on the north side of the Llyn Peninsula in north-west Wales. It’s a quiet harbour, protected by a headland.
Back in the 1800s, more than 600 ships used to stop here each year. The Ty Coch pub, which started out as a vicar’s house in the 1820s, became a pub in 1842 to serve the shipbuilders working nearby.

But in the end, Holyhead was chosen instead as the site for the new port, and the area stayed as it was.
Now, the Ty Coch pub and the little village of Porthdinllaen are among the most photographed spots along the UK coast—and some say the pub has the best location in the whole country.
Not long ago, Ty Coch was even named the third best beach bar in the world, beating out famous ones in places like Australia and the Caribbean. It’s not hard to see why.

And it makes the perfect finishing point for a beautiful walk. This four-mile loop starts near Morfa Nefyn beach, heads through Edern, then joins the coast again. You'll pass the RNLI station and end up at the Ty Coch before walking back along the beach.
Porthdinllaen has been looked after by the National Trust since 1994. It was once a busy fishing village and a safe place for ships during storms. Pigs used to be sent from here to markets in Liverpool, and salt was brought in for preserving herring caught in nearby Nefyn.
The Ty Coch Inn, with amazing views across the bay and the Eifl mountains, is the perfect place to stop—even when the weather’s rough. It became world-famous in 2013 when it was named the third best beach bar on the planet.
After your visit, you can head back to the car park along the beach. Just go up the steps behind the beach warden’s hut. If the tide’s in, there’s another path behind the Ty Coch that leads up to Lon Golff and back to your car.

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
