A charming seaside town in Cumbria has average house prices of just £170,000 and sees hardly any tourists, as most head straight to the Lake District.
Even though it is only a short distance from the famous Lake District, which attracts up to 19 million visitors a year, this coastal town offers surprisingly low property prices.
For many, living by the sea feels out of reach, but this place is breaking that rule and has been described as having “huge potential”.
Whitehaven was once one of the busiest ports in the UK and still showcases a wealth of beautiful Georgian buildings, adding to its appeal.
Historians believe its grid-style layout was even used as a model when New York was being expanded. According to last year’s figures, the average property price in Whitehaven is £170,350.
Rightmove data shows that semi-detached homes average around £170,917, terraced properties cost about £121,165, and detached houses average £278,550. All of these are well below the current UK average of £268,400, according to Zoopla.
Locals have said that while the Lake District is just 12 miles away, many visitors overlook Whitehaven in their rush to get to the national park.
The Whitehaven coastline is protected by the National Trust and offers scenic walking routes, wildflower meadows and an abundance of wildlife.
Puffins and guillemots nest on the cliffs, which are also safeguarded by the RSPB. The town has its own small sand and pebble beach, and walkers can follow the coastal path to St Bees Head, the most westerly point in Cumbria.
History lovers can visit The Beacon Museum and The Rum Story, which share the fascinating history of Whitehaven, the Cumbrian coast and the town’s role in the rum trade. St Nicholas’s Church on Lowther Street is the resting place of Mildred Warner Washington, grandmother of George Washington, the first US president. She died in 1701 shortly after marrying her second husband, George Gale, a tobacco importer from Whitehaven.
The town also has a growing food scene, with a variety of restaurants and cafés to enjoy.
Whitehaven is easy to get to via the A595 by car. There are also regular bus services from nearby towns like Workington and Maryport, and it sits on the Cumbrian Coast Line, making train travel straightforward.
