This stunning stretch of coastline is becoming a popular choice for those looking for a quieter beach escape.
One of the UK’s most hidden beaches was once used as a dumping site, but after years of clean-up efforts, it’s now drawing in new visitors.
This little gem in County Durham is one of the UK’s most secluded beaches, and with hardly any posts on Instagram, you might even get to enjoy this beach all to yourself.
Research by Onbuy.com shows it’s the second most secluded beach in the UK. With few social media tags, this beautiful northeast beach is a true hidden gem.
Surprisingly, this beach was once used as a waste dump—but visitors say you’d never guess it by looking at it now.
For decades, it was a dumping ground for four mines in East Durham, which may explain why it’s still not well known.
Research shows the 12km stretch of beach was buried under at least 2.5 million tonnes of mining waste every single year.
But today, Horden Beach has been completely transformed, and since the late 1990s, it’s been a home for wildlife and a peaceful spot for visitors.
One Tripadvisor visitor said, “It’s a lovely walk from Peterlee if you go through Castle Eden Dene, with beautiful scenery. The views from Blackhall cliffs are great too.”
Another visitor wrote, “This is a unique beach to visit. You wouldn’t see much of its past now, but it’s still worth the trip.
“There’s a narrow lane down to the beach marked from the village, leading to a small car park at the bottom. You can follow the path down to the beach.”
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
