With the clocks going back and colder weather settling in, now is the perfect time to plan a cosy winter escape close to home.
Luckily, Britain has plenty of beautiful spots to choose from, with stunning villages and towns dotted across the country.
If you need some inspiration, there’s one charming village once named England’s “most beautiful” that’s well worth a winter visit.
Nunney is a peaceful little place tucked away in the heart of the West Country, within Somerset’s Mendip district. The village is full of history, much of which can still be seen today, reports The Mirror.
Its old castle, traditional pub, and lovely scenery are some of the main reasons visitors are drawn here.
The castle, which has a French-style design, was built in 1371 for Sir John Dalaware and is surrounded by a wide moat. It’s said to have been inspired by the famous Bastille in Paris.
The fortress has survived the centuries remarkably well and is described by Visit Somerset as being “perfectly in scale with its surroundings.”
You can pick up a walking route from the Frome Tourist Information Centre, which is one of the best ways to explore Nunney’s main sights.
If you start to feel hungry while exploring, make sure to stop at The George pub, which sits right opposite the castle.
This 17th-century coaching inn still has its original wooden beams and cosy open fires that crackle through the winter months.
It serves hearty local food and has 10 guest rooms for anyone wanting to stay the night. If you’d like to make your trip longer, the market town of Frome is just two miles away.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
