The secret Scottish beach once crowned the best place to ‘escape the crowds’

Scotland’s summer has been unpredictable so far. Much of the country has seen rain, but brighter skies are hopefully on the way.

A favourite summer activity is a trip to the seaside. While sunshine makes a beach day extra special, Scotland’s coastline is still breathtaking even when the rain is pouring down.

One benefit of visiting the beach in wet weather is that you are likely to find fewer people around.

And even without going for a swim, the sea can still be enjoyed on a calm and peaceful afternoon.

Scotland is full of hidden bays that are ideal for a quiet outing. One was even once named the “top hidden beach in Scotland to escape the crowds.”

That beach is Camusdarach, found on the west coast of the Highlands, just south of the River Morar estuary.

Camusdarach is especially famous for appearing in the 1983 Scottish film Local Hero. It was used as the fictional “Ben’s Beach,” with most of the film’s beach scenes shot there.

The beach is only a short walk from Camusdarach Campsite, which offers camping pitches, glamping pods and self-catering apartments.

The site stays open until 15 September and includes Wi-Fi as well as modern shower and toilet facilities.

Experts have described the bay as “one of the most beautiful in the country, if not the entire world.” From the sand, you can enjoy sweeping views of the Isle of Skye, Rum and Eigg.

It is not just experts who are impressed, as visitors have also shared glowing reviews. On Google, Camusdarach Beach has a near-perfect score of 4.9 out of 5 from more than 400 reviews.

One reviewer wrote: “A very beautiful white sand beach. When we visited it was windy, which some surfers were making the most of.”

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
