Rising dramatically from the turquoise waters of Mount's Bay, this stunning, granite-topped island is crowned by a colossal, ancient fortress that feels utterly mysterious and untouched.
The atmosphere is one of profound isolation and history, yet it is tantalisingly close to the mainland.
Twice a day, this magical spot performs an eerie vanishing act as the tide rushes in, cutting it completely off from the world.
The breathtaking destination we’ve uncovered for your next holiday is St Michael’s Mount, a genuinely iconic tidal island located just off the coast of Marazion in Cornwall.
This geological marvel perfectly mimics its more famous French counterpart, Mont-Saint-Michel, providing an astonishing piece of Norman architecture right here in Britain.
This spot is a dream for keen walkers, historians, and anyone seeking a truly unique coastal experience.
St Michael’s Mount’s incredible secret is the ancient, cobbled granite causeway, a "giant's highway", that only appears during low tide, allowing visitors to walk right across the seabed to the island.
Local legend claims the mount is the site of an appearance by the Archangel Michael himself, and it was once the centre of the mythical drowned forest kingdom of Lyonesse.
It is a piece of living folklore built upon a foundation of powerful history.
For practical travellers, be aware that visiting requires careful planning around the tides; if you miss the causeway, you will need to rely on the small ferry service.
There is a large pay-and-display car park in Marazion, but facilities on the island itself are limited due to its small size and residential nature.
Ensure your boot is packed with sensible, waterproof boots for traversing the slippery granite causeway or climbing the steep path to the castle.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
