UK seaside village with a ‘stunning’ beach crowned autumn’s most relaxing escape

A coastal village known for its beautiful beach has been named one of the best places in the UK for an autumn getaway.

This hidden gem in South Devon sits within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is a favourite with walkers, birdwatchers, watersport fans, and families wanting a peaceful break by the sea.

The village is so well loved that it has been crowned the most relaxing place in the UK to visit during the cooler months.

Bigbury-on-Sea earned this title from Parkdean Resorts, which described the “peaceful village” as perfect for a calm and restful autumn staycation.

The holiday company said: “This seaside treasure has breathtaking views, quiet walking trails, and gentle shores. Its calm atmosphere and natural charm make it the ideal spot to unwind and enjoy nature this autumn.”

The village sits within the South Devon National Landscape, an area known for its wildlife and stunning scenery. Just off the coast lies the famous Burgh Island, which visitors can reach by walking across a sandy path when the tide is low.

When the tide rises, the sea covers the path and the only way back to the mainland is by sea tractor or boat.

The beach is also popular with sports lovers, as it’s a great place for windsurfing and paddleboarding. There’s a café nearby, as well as public toilets and parking, making it a convenient and family-friendly spot.

Dogs are welcome on the main beach from October to May, while the beach west of the causeway is open to them all year round.

For those who enjoy walking, there are plenty of coastal trails starting near the beach that offer breathtaking views of the cliffs and sea.

One reviewer on TripAdvisor wrote: “Bigbury-on-Sea is a real gem if you’re looking for a dog-friendly beach with places to eat and drink just a short walk away.”

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
