With autumn well underway and the sunshine still making an appearance, many Brits are making the most of the great outdoors.
One of the best ways to enjoy a day out is by exploring new places for walks, picnics, and adventures in nature, and visitors say this spot near Newcastle feels “like something from a fairytale”.
Perfect for couples, families, or groups of friends, this gem is a breathtaking National Trust estate in Northumberland, close to the town of Rothbury.
The Victorian Tudor-style mansion was built for William and Margaret Armstrong in 1863 and took 26 years to finish.
The 1,000-acre grounds are filled with woodlands, lakes, gardens, bridges, waterfalls, and even a fantasy-style mountain landscape. Visitors can also enjoy three cafés and a gift shop on site.
Recently, a local adventurer who goes by the name Geordie Hiker online described Cragside as “hands down one of the best National Trust sites and one of our personal favourite places to visit in Northumberland”.
The Instagram creator, who has over 191,000 followers, added: “Cragside is known for its incredible landscapes, from woodlands and lakes to bridges, waterfalls, and gardens. It was even the first house in the world to be powered by hydroelectricity.”

She shared that she explored nine different trails around the estate with her partner and child, covering about 5.5 miles, and said the walks offered “spectacular views”.
“There’s so much to do here,” she said. One visitor agreed, writing: “We went for the first time last week! It’s stunning and I think it’s my new favourite National Trust property.”
Another said: “It’s my favourite National Trust place so far! I love how the house actually feels like a home rather than a cold museum.”
Someone else added: “A beautiful place. I visited a few years ago after watching a documentary on TV. Wow, what a gorgeous spot.”
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
