Waterfall and old packhorse bridge tucked among cottages in a quintessentially English village

With its pretty stone cottages, rolling green scenery and views that look like they belong on a tea tin, it is easy to see why families love visiting this place.

Set in one of the loveliest parts of the Yorkshire Dales, this sweet little village feels perfect for slow Sunday walks.

Most people start their visit at Cauldron Falls, which sits just a short stroll from the village green.

You will hear the splash of the waterfall through the trees before you catch sight of it. Children enjoy climbing over the rocks at the edge, with an adult keeping a close eye on them, of course.

From there, an easy circular walk takes you to West Burton’s ancient packhorse bridge, which feels like a hidden gem waiting to be found.

It sparks the imagination straight away, making you think of traders guiding ponies loaded with goods across it centuries ago.

These days it is more often families and walkers stopping for a photo or children leaning over to look for fish.

The old stone bridge is still impressively sturdy, and it offers a peaceful spot to stand and watch the gentle flow of the water below.

In the centre of the village, the stone cottages are charming with their mismatched doors, bright flower boxes and slightly crooked chimneys.

If you fancy a stroll, there are paths leading off in every direction.

Some trails rise gently into the hills, giving brilliant views across the dale, while others wander past farms where sheep wander right up to the fences.

When you need a rest, West Burton’s pub and café serve exactly the comforting Yorkshire food you want after a walk. Think steaming bowls of soup, tasty sandwiches and big slices of cake.

If you feel like exploring further, Leyburn is only a short journey away and is the lively little town that proudly calls itself the capital of Wensleydale.

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
