Stepping into this little corner of Tewkesbury Borough in Gloucestershire feels like walking into a classic English countryside scene.
The village rests on the edge of the Cotswold Hills, around three miles southwest of Broadway in the nearby county of Worcestershire.
Although it officially sits within Gloucestershire, many people mistakenly think it belongs to Worcestershire because its postal address is linked to Broadway.
The village is also close to Stanway in Gloucestershire, the home of the impressive Stanway House.
One of the most eye-catching things about this village is that almost every home is built from beautiful Cotswold stone.
The Mount pub acts as the main meeting place for locals and visitors, and you’ll find it right at the end of the high street.
Architectural expert Pevsner once described it as “architecturally the most distinguished of the smaller villages in the North Cotswolds”.
Other important buildings include St Michael’s Church, which dates back to Norman times, along with Stanton Court and The Manor, also known as “Warren House”, built in 1577.
The village’s roots stretch all the way back to the reign of Kenulf, king of Mercia.
He granted the tithes and patronage of Stanton to the Benedictine Abbey in Winchcombe in the year 811.
The village was saved from slipping into decline in 1906 thanks to Sir Philip Sidney Stott, an English architect, engineer and surveyor.
Sir Philip spent both his money and skills restoring Stanton Court and several other historic buildings. Among the standouts today is Sheppey Corner.
This Grade II listed thatched cottage, built around 1650, sits proudly at the top of the high street and often appears on Cotswold postcards and souvenirs. Once a large home and barn, it was later turned into three lovely cottages: the Cloisters, Sheppey Cottage and Pixie Cottage.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
