A charming beach in Norfolk shares its name with one of the most famous places in the world.
This hidden gem near Great Yarmouth may not have the glamour of its American namesake, but it is still a brilliant spot to visit.
Just down the coast from the more simply named Scratby, this beautiful stretch of sand got its unusual title back in 1848. That year, gold coins from the 16th century were found on the beach at the same time as the California Gold Rush in America.
Inspired by this, locals gave the beach its now iconic name. Set beneath sloping cliffs, it may not have Malibu mansions or palm trees, but it is backed by plenty of caravan parks, making it a favourite with families.
The beach can be reached by a sloping path with steps at the bottom, leading down to a wide shoreline of sand and shingle.
Visitors can also access it by walking along the cliffs or strolling from Caister along the beach.
California Beach merges smoothly with Scratby Beach, creating a peaceful and scenic part of the Norfolk coast.
At the entrance you will find refreshments, as well as public toilets and facilities for disabled visitors, according to the Mirror.
There is parking nearby, though spaces are limited, so visitors are encouraged to plan ahead.
For a cosy stop, many tourists recommend the Tastebud Tearooms. This welcoming café is well known for its friendly service and tasty food, with an impressive 4.5 out of 5 Tripadvisor rating.

One happy customer called it a “Lovely quaint place,” adding that they had “the best toasted cheese scones we’ve ever had. Lovely staff, can be a bit of a wait but it’s worth it.”
Close by is the local pub, The California Tavern, which serves real ales and hearty meals. It also has a beer garden and often hosts live music, making it a lively spot for visitors.
Only a short drive away is the busy seaside town of Great Yarmouth, home to the famous Golden Mile.
This lively stretch is filled with classic attractions, arcades and amusements running between its two piers.
Marine Parade, the centre of the seafront, is packed with pubs, restaurants and adventure golf.
It also offers stunning sea views, and at night the promenade glitters with lights shaped like sails stretching from Britannia Pier to the Pleasure Beach.
