Charming seaside town known for serving some of the best ice cream in the country

A popular seaside town that brings in thousands of visitors every year has more to offer than just beautiful views and clear blue water.

St Ives in Cornwall is well known for its scones and seafood, but it also has some of the best ice cream in the UK, according to a recent guide.

A BBC Food guide recently named Moomaid of Zennor in St Ives as the third best ice cream shop in the country. That gives holidaymakers yet another reason to stop by during the busy summer season.

The guide said: “West Cornwall is a battleground for ice cream wars, but this classy parlour wins with its imaginative flavours.

Try the espresso martini flavour for a coffee kick, or Shipwreck Extra Stormy, which is a dreamy mix of salted caramel ice cream with chunks of honeycomb and chocolate.”

Moomaid of Zennor makes its ice cream on a small family farm that sits on the cliffs between Zennor Hill and the Atlantic Ocean.

They make fancy ice cream without using any fake colours, flavours or preservatives, then send it to their shop in St Ives where locals and visitors can enjoy it.

On their website, the company explains how the ice cream is made. It all starts with their Friesian Holstein cows, which graze on the cliffs before being brought in to be milked, just as they have been for years.

Then, instead of the milk going far, it travels just a few steps across the yard to the old dairy, where the ice cream is made.

There, it’s mixed with Rodda’s Cornish Clotted Cream or Double Cream, using top-of-the-line Italian machines and a touch of Italian skill.

St Ives is often called one of the UK’s best tourist towns, and it attracts both millionaires and everyday visitors.

But because it’s so popular, some people say tourism has gone too far, even calling St Ives "patient zero" for over-tourism in the UK.

Tourism brings in around £85 million a year for the area, which is a big amount for a town with fewer than 11,000 people.

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
