One of Britain’s best pubs also happens to be a favourite royal stop-off, with Prince William reportedly visiting it in secret after an engagement in Cornwall.
The remote inn, tucked away on Dartmoor in Devon, has a cosy open fire that’s said to have “never gone out” since the day it opened back in 1845.
The pub sits more than 400 metres above sea level, surrounded by the wild beauty of Dartmoor National Park.

You’ll find it in Postbridge, between Princetown and Moretonhampstead, in one of the most peaceful spots in the region.
The pub is owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, so it’s no surprise that members of the royal family occasionally drop in.
Prince William even posed for a photo in front of the pub’s famous fire last autumn, on Thursday, October 17, 2024.
With its sweeping views and warm, homely atmosphere, The Warren House Inn makes the perfect winter escape for anyone who enjoys being far from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Visitors often describe it as a “proper pub” serving generous, hearty meals and offering “endless views” across the moors. One of its most loved dishes, the rabbit pie known as “Warreners Pie,” has been called “absolutely delicious.”
Many guests who stop by for a pint or a hot meal have shared glowing reviews on TripAdvisor, praising the friendly feel of the place. One wrote that the pub’s “free atmosphere” was “so welcoming in an ever-changing world.”

They continued: “We’d just come back from a windy, wet walk on the beautiful moors. My husband and I had visited years ago and were thrilled to find the rabbit pie still as good as ever.”
“We brought our two Labradors and sat in the dog area, which had loads of room – not cramped like some pubs. The staff were so lovely, greeting us the second we stepped through the door, soaked and windswept.”
“I love how genuine this place feels. It’s a proper, no-frills pub that hasn’t been taken over by interior designers. The warm, welcoming vibe was perfect on such a wild weather day – you can tell people really love it here.”
The Warren House Inn’s website tells the story of the historic 19th-century pub: “Originally built to serve the busy local tin mining community, the inn was always a favourite gathering spot for miners from nearby tin mines, including Golden Dagger, Vitifer and Birch Tor Mines.”
