Enchanting UK town with fairy-tale cobbles, Tudor homes and a castle perched on a hill

There’s still time to squeeze in a winter break if you haven’t managed one yet. And according to two popular travel experts, there’s no better choice than a “fairytale town” that sits only an hour away from London.

Theo and Rodrigo, who are keen travellers from Italy and Brazil, often share their favourite holiday spots from across the world.

In their newest video, they singled out a small town in East Sussex as somewhere you really shouldn’t miss.

“It feels like it’s been untouched for years,” they said in a TikTok video, pointing out the town centre filled with old Tudor buildings.

The place they were talking about? “It’s called Rye,” they explained. “Think cobbled lanes, pretty cottages and a castle sitting proudly on the hill.”

Theo and Rodrigo also highlighted Rye’s most famous street, Mermaid Street. Many people say it’s one of the loveliest streets in the whole country.

“It’s full of quirky houses and tiny shops you’ll want to explore,” they said.

Their video also mentioned Fletchers House, well known for its high tea, plus The Old Shed off-licence, Rye Deli, and Simply Rye, which sells local gifts.

They added: “It’s ideal for a gentle wander or settling into a cosy pub for lunch.”

The pair filmed the beautiful streets as they passed Rye Pottery and other well-known spots. You can even walk down towards the beach if you fancy a bit of sea breeze.

They also pointed out that getting to Rye is “really simple” – travellers coming from London just need to change trains at Ashford in Kent.

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.

“From a real estate perspective, heritage towns with preserved Tudor architecture and protected historic streetscapes tend to benefit from long-term supply constraints, which can support property values over time. Areas with strong cultural identity, walkability, and tourism appeal often see sustained demand for boutique hospitality, short-term rentals, and second-home investments. The challenge, and opportunity, lies in balancing conservation regulations with modern infrastructure upgrades to maintain both livability and investment attractiveness.” Visit estate agents ilford
