Pretty beach where dolphins are often spotted sits just minutes from one of the most beautiful seaside towns

Dorset is a favourite choice for people booking staycations, and this summer there was a huge 60 percent rise in Google searches for ‘best beaches in Dorset’.

This part of the Jurassic Coast has loads of stunning spots, but one quieter hidden gem you might not know about is this beach.

Just a five to ten minute walk from Lyme Regis, it’s usually much calmer than the beaches closer to the town.

Sharing her love for the beach, Gemma Matthews, owner of Dorset & Devon Holiday Cottages, said: "It’s easy for people to walk past Monmouth Beach and head straight for the busier Lyme Regis beaches a little further along, especially because it’s a pebble beach.

But people shouldn’t judge it by the pebbles alone, it has so much to offer."

Even though Monmouth Beach isn’t as well-known as nearby sandy beaches, that’s actually a bonus. It means it’s much quieter, giving visitors a break from the busy crowds at other local beaches.

It’s also a great choice no matter what you enjoy doing, with Gemma adding: "If you love history and exploring, fossil hunting is a brilliant way to spend your day here.

Monmouth is one of the best places to find small ammonites and plant fossils; some people have even found signs of other prehistoric creatures!"

She continued: "If you’re lucky, you might spot some amazing sea animals too. Chippel Bay, right next to the beach, is often visited by seals and dolphins, which are always exciting to see.

"If you’re here for a quieter day out, the beach is dog-friendly all year round, so it’s perfect for a long walk with your dog while enjoying the beautiful Jurassic Coast views, especially at sunset."

Just ten minutes from Monmouth Beach on foot is the lively town of Lyme Regis. This lovely town was named one of the UK’s ‘most beautiful’ seaside towns last year by global travel site Big 7 Travel.

The company teamed up with Holidaycars.com to discover the country’s favourite seaside town by asking their 371,000 social media followers. Lyme Regis came in sixth place, while New Quay in Ceredigion, Wales, took first place.

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
