Fairytale Northumberland waterfall hailed as a best kept secret and a picture perfect escape

The North East of England is packed with hidden gems, and one waterfall in Northumberland has been named as one of the best kept secrets in the whole region.

It is also a picture perfect choice if you are searching for a lovely autumn walk surrounded by colourful leaves.

Hidden in a quiet valley close to the charming village of Ford, this hidden gem is the sort of place you need to see with your own eyes to truly understand how beautiful it is.

Many online reviews mention that it can be a little tricky to reach, as there is a steep bank to climb down, but most visitors agree the view at the end makes it all worthwhile.

People have called Routin Linn the perfect spot for a dog walk, and words such as tranquil, peaceful and calming are often used to describe it.

One review from earlier this year says: "Beautiful place, so peaceful, a brilliant area for a walk or picnic." Another visitor who felt the journey was worth it wrote: "Beautiful waterfall once you work out how to get there."

Routin Linn is a striking waterfall on the River Till, close to the Northumberland and Scottish border. The water tumbles over a wide rocky ledge before dropping into a deep pool below, creating a powerful rush that echoes through the trees.

The area around Routin Linn is rich in history as well as natural beauty.

Nearby, you can find ancient rock carvings and traces of an old hillfort, which show that people have been drawn to this peaceful valley for thousands of years. It adds an extra sense of mystery to a walk that already feels special.

In autumn, the woodland surrounding Routin Linn turns shades of gold, orange and deep red.

Fallen leaves crunch under your feet as you follow the path, and the cool air makes the walk feel fresh and exciting. It is the perfect time of year to visit if you want quiet trails, beautiful scenery and a true Northumberland hidden gem.

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
