Set where the Afon Mellte meets the Afon Nedd Fechan, this village has long been a favourite spot for people who love nature and outdoor adventures.
With its powerful waterfalls, steep gorges and a strong industrial past woven into the wild landscape, this hidden gem deserves a place on any South Wales travel list, according to the Express.
This place has a fascinating history that grew during the Industrial Revolution. In the 1800s, the area changed quickly as ironworks were built, coal was traded in large amounts and the Swansea Canal was created.
Throughout the 19th century, this part of Wales was busy with ironworks and coal mines that helped drive the Welsh economy during the Industrial Revolution.
Pontneddfechan Ironworks was once at the centre of the local iron trade and played an important role in helping the area grow and prosper.
The village that developed around the industry still has many buildings from that hardworking time, giving visitors a glimpse into what life was like for the people who lived and worked here.
Today, Pontneddfechan is known as the gateway to Waterfall Country, which covers the upper part of the Vale of Neath in South Wales.
This popular area at the top of the valley is famous for its large number of waterfalls that are open to the public, drawing visitors from all over.
A short walk from the centre of the village brings you to the first waterfall, Sgwd Clun Gwyn. Its deep and dramatic drop makes it one of the most impressive sights in the region.
The walking routes around Pontneddfechan range from easy paths to more challenging trails, but each one rewards you with stunning scenery.
If you enjoy adventurous walks and do not mind a splash of water, Sgwd yr Eira is well worth visiting.
Tucked away in a green corner of the Bannau Brycheiniog, this powerful waterfall forms part of the well known Four Waterfalls Walk and is a highlight of any trip.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
