Flying Scotsman journey linking two UK cities with magical Christmas markets

If you enjoy festive days out or love the idea of riding a classic steam train, you might want to book a trip on the Flying Scotsman this winter.

On Sunday, December 14, the famous engine will travel from York to Newcastle, with pick up stops in London, Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire.

Leaving from Finsbury Park, a Class 67 diesel locomotive with Mk3 carriages dressed up for Christmas will make its way through Potters Bar, Stevenage and Peterborough to collect passengers for this special festive journey.

As the train rolls across the fenland countryside, travellers will reach York. During the trip, passengers can enjoy hot and cold drinks from the buffet car, along with a breakfast bap to start their morning.

When they arrive in York, everyone will switch trains and step aboard the iconic Flying Scotsman.

As the Flying Scotsman heads towards Newcastle, it will pass the city of Durham, giving passengers a view of the historic cathedral.

There will also be a quick sight of the Angel of the North before the train crosses the King Edward VII Bridge and makes its grand entry into the city.

Travellers can enjoy the old fashioned charm of this 19th century steam train, with clouds of steam drifting past the windows as it moves along.

Guests will then have three hours to explore Newcastle, giving plenty of time to wander around the Christmas Market or the Christmas Village at Old Eldon Square.

Whether you need to finish your Christmas shopping or want to try some festive food and drink, a gentle walk around the stalls could help you get into the holiday mood, reports Cambridgeshire Live.

Newcastle’s Christmas Market has something for everyone. At its centre is the Rockin’ Reindeer stage, where families can book tickets for Santa’s Stories.

This fun show features Santa reading a tale, interactive moments for children and a special Nice List certificate for kids who have been well behaved.

Just above the market, you will find igloo pods that can be hired as a cosy break from the winter cold.

These warm igloos offer views of the sparkling lights along Grey Street, and guests can enjoy a full drinks menu, including mulled wine for adults and hot chocolate for children.

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
