Hidden gem Scottish waterfall with breathtaking views that’s perfect for a weekend day out

After a busy week, the weekend finally arrives and it is time to decide how to make the most of your days off.

With warm weather and sunshine across much of Scotland, plenty of people will be heading outdoors to explore.

When the sun is out, the beach is always a popular choice, and we recently spent a day at Scotland’s top seaside destination to see if it really deserved the praise.

If you would rather enjoy something quieter and more relaxing, a countryside walk is hard to beat.

Scotland has countless beautiful trails to choose from, but one place that stands out is the Grey Mare’s Tail Nature Reserve.

This lush green reserve sits on the eastern edge of Dumfries and Galloway, close to the Scottish Borders.

At its heart is Grey Mare’s Tail, an impressive 60 metre waterfall that truly has to be seen in person.

As one of the tallest waterfalls in the UK, it drops dramatically into the Moffat Water Valley below.

The National Trust for Scotland describes it as one of Scotland’s favourite waterfalls, and it is easy to understand why.

Grey Mare’s Tail Nature Reserve is also rich in wildlife. The National Trust for Scotland says the area is home to upland plants, peregrine falcons, ring ouzels and even wild goats.

If you follow the path up towards the stunning Loch Skeen, you may be lucky enough to spot ospreys or even vendace, the rarest fish species in the UK.

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
