For anyone scared of heights, darkness or both, being lowered nearly 400 feet through a waterfall into a cave might sound quite frightening.
Yet many visitors have been amazed by their journey into this hidden gem in Yorkshire, where twice a year people can be lowered into the huge cavern using a winch system.
Thanks to the Bradford Pothole Club and the Craven Pothole Club, brave visitors sit on a small seat that slowly carries them down to the floor of the chamber in just a few minutes.
One person who tried it was the TikTok travel page The Reluctant Explorers, known online as @thereluctantexplorers, who recorded their descent into the cave.
At the start of their video, they asked: “Would you dare to be lowered into the depths below?”
They explained that they were winched 110 metres down the UK’s tallest single drop waterfall.
The waterfall is Fell Beck, a stream that flows through the Yorkshire Dales before plunging straight into the darkness of Gaping Gill.
In the comments, The Reluctant Explorers called the trip a real bucket list experience, and many others agreed.
One person wrote: “The ride down on the winch is incredible. It feels like being part of a film set.”
Another added: “Brilliant experience, one of the best things I have done in years.”
Once at the bottom, visitors are taken on a guided walk through the vast cave system, lit up by bright floodlights so they can see the impressive rock formations, according to the Yorkshire Dales website.
Inside, the main cavern is around 475 feet long, 82 feet wide and 115 feet high, and has even been described by the Times of India as big enough to hold a cathedral.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
