The UK has some incredible natural landmarks, including well known waterfalls such as this hidden gem in the Yorkshire Dales.
This three tier waterfall has been admired for centuries. Famous names like William Wordsworth once visited, and it has even appeared in a major Hollywood film.
One group clearly impressed by the falls was the Yorkshire TikTok page Adventures in Yorkshire, known online as @adve_nturesinyorkshire.
They posted videos showing all three sections of the waterfall and shared some of its history.
They wrote: “The three stepped waterfalls at Aysgarth have been attracting visitors for more than 200 years.
“William Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy stopped here while their coach horses were changed, and artist J M W Turner sketched the falls during his tour of the north.
“In more recent years the falls were used as a dramatic backdrop in the Hollywood film Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. Aysgarth Falls is made up of three waterfalls formed by the River Ure.
“The falls look especially impressive after heavy rain, when huge amounts of water pour over the wide limestone steps, which are split into three sections known as the Upper Force, Middle Force and Lower Force.”
The videos received lots of positive comments, including from people who had already visited. One person wrote: “Magical place.”
Another added: “I saw it like this about three years ago. Absolutely magnificent.”
While the beauty of the waterfalls has drawn visitors for hundreds of years, many people now recognise them from Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, which starred actors such as Kevin Costner, Alan Rickman and Morgan Freeman.
The waterfalls were used as the setting for the famous stick fighting scene where Robin Hood and Little John battle with wooden staffs in the river.
There is more to explore nearby too, including the Freeholders’ Wood Nature Reserve, which offers peaceful woodland walks close to Aysgarth Falls.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
