The National Trust have expressed their concerns about the future of their gardens, parks, and woodlands due to the ongoing extreme weather in the UK.
Rangers and gardeners are on high alert, ready to deal with potential damage from upcoming storms.
The conservation charity is also monitoring how the changing weather could affect the colours of autumn, with concerns over the impact of frequent storms.
Luke Barley, the National Trust's senior national consultant for trees and woodland, explained: "We are worried about the effect of more storms hitting when trees still have their leaves, as the wind could cause more damage than the trees and their habitats can handle."
He also pointed out that last year had the highest number of named storms since the system started in 2015.
This increase in severe weather is making things difficult for National Trust foresters and woodland managers.
The constant switching between waterlogged and dry soil is also putting trees under stress. This stress is visible in the reduced health of their crowns.
However, Mr Barley added that some storm damage in native woodlands is actually part of a "natural process" that creates the kind of chaos and energy that woodland wildlife needs to thrive.
After a wetter spring and a cooler summer than usual, this autumn’s display of colours is expected to be a "mixed bag."
Mr Barley said: "We've seen very mixed conditions so far this year, especially the wet start. But if temperatures drop gradually and the weather settles, we could see a longer-lasting autumn display."
On the other hand, if there are sharp frosts or more storms with heavy rain and strong winds, it could shorten the colourful display of leaves across the country.
