One part of Scotland has beaches so stunning and seas so bright you might think you’d travelled abroad.
Although Scotland is often known for its chilly, wet weather, it’s also home to a breathtaking island nicknamed the ‘Hawaii of the North’.
This hidden gem sits 22 miles west of Ardnamurchan, the closest point on the mainland, and around 60 miles west of Oban, where a four-hour ferry can take you straight to the island.
Thanks to its spot in the warm Gulf Stream, Tiree enjoys some of the sunniest days and mildest weather anywhere in the UK.
Frost is rare here, even in winter, although the island’s flat landscape can make it very windy during the colder months – something to keep in mind if you’re planning a winter trip.
When spring and summer roll around, the breeze feels fresh and pleasant, and it also helps keep pesky midges and other biting insects away.
Tiree has several incredible beaches, but the largest, Gott Bay, is a favourite for windsurfers and sand yachters. When the tide goes out, a narrow strip of sand connects Gott Bay to the small Island of Soa.
Another favourite spot is Crossapol Beach, which draws both windsurfers and wildlife lovers. In the summer, you might even spot the tall fins of gentle Basking Sharks in the clear water.
A must-see for visitors is the Ringing Stone, a huge boulder perched on smaller rocks that makes a metallic sound when you tap it.
Experts believe the stone was placed here by the Megalithic Builders and carried to Tiree during the Ice Age.
Local legend, however, tells a different tale, that a giant on the nearby Isle of Mull threw it here. The story also warns that if the stone is ever moved, Tiree will sink beneath the waves.
For those curious about Tiree’s past, the An Iodhlann Archive and Museum offers exhibitions all year round, giving an in-depth look at the island’s rich history and the people who have called it home.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
