A little village in North Wales looks more like a sunny Mediterranean resort than a normal UK seaside spot.
When Brits dream of the perfect holiday, they often picture faraway places, but there’s a stunning hidden gem much closer to home.
This hidden gem, found along the Dwyryd Estuary in North Wales, doesn’t feel like your typical British coast.
A trip here could easily fool you into thinking you’ve arrived in Italy, with its bright Mediterranean-style buildings, sandy beaches, and pretty little shops. And the best bit?
It’s known for having some of the cheapest fish and chips in the country. Figures from last year show visitors pay just £8.57 on average for this classic meal, according to Capital on Tap.
That makes this seaside beauty the third most affordable spot for fish and chips in the UK, behind only Southwold in Suffolk and New Brighton in Wirral. On top of that, Portmeirion is a big hit online.
Travel influencer Meera Pankhania shared how she fell in love with it. “My boyfriend and I were meant to go to Portugal that weekend, but when it went on the Amber list, we came here instead and even climbed Mount Snowdon,” she said in a TikTok video.
“We stayed for two days, and even though I’ve never been to Italy, it really felt like Lake Como. To get there, you travel through amazing roads with stunning views.”
This unique village is also famous as the filming location for the cult 1960s TV show The Prisoner.
In the heart of Gwynedd, Portmeirion was the creation of architect Clough Williams-Ellis, who spent 50 years bringing his dream village to life after buying the land in 1925.
Today, Portmeirion is home to an impressive collection of listed buildings, including the Grade I Listed Portmeirion Town Hall, built in 1938. Surprisingly, there are no permanent residents here, as the village is mainly for visitors and holidaymakers.
During the summer season, Portmeirion is open daily from 9.30am to 6.30pm, welcoming guests seven days a week.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
