Scotland’s breathtaking gem perfect for stargazing just an hour from Glasgow

On clear nights, the loch reflects the stars above, making it a brilliant spot for stargazing, far away from the bright lights of the city.

Just an hour’s drive from Glasgow, one of Europe’s most amazing stargazing spots is gaining attention – and it’s easy to see why!

This hidden gem, found in the middle of the Trossachs, has special Dark Sky Discovery Sites on both its north and south shores.

When the skies are clear, the calm waters reflect the starry night, creating a magical sight.

Because it’s far enough away from the glow of Scotland’s Central Belt, it’s a perfect place for anyone wanting to enjoy the beauty of the night sky.

April, known as Astronomy Month, is the best time to discover Scotland’s top places for stargazing.

Loch Venachar, one of six spots picked out by VisitScotland as “stunning stargazing locations,” is definitely worth a visit.

Thanks to Scotland’s northern location and low levels of light pollution, VisitScotland says it’s “one of the best places to experience dark skies,” with “some of the darkest and most amazing night skies in Europe.”

Loch Venachar sits right in the middle of the Trossachs, between the lovely town of Callander and the little village of Brig O’ Turk.

The area is full of peaceful hiking trails through quiet, wooded hills, making it a great place for exploring during the day as well as for stargazing at night.

The loch is said to be “well off the beaten track and far from city lights,” making it a perfect place for watching the stars.

Both sides of Loch Venachar have been awarded the special Dark Sky Discovery Site status, showing just how good the stargazing is here with hardly any light pollution.

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
