Secret UK beach with turquoise waters where swimmers can spot seals

This quiet cove has crystal-clear waters and is often described as feeling like a step back in time. But reaching this peaceful stretch of coast is not easy, and it might not suit everyone.

On the far edge of West Cornwall lies a coastline that seems untouched by modern life. It is a place hidden in plain sight, known by those who search for it but often missed by the usual tourist crowds.

The walk to reach it is part of the adventure. The path takes you through ancient woodland where sunlight filters through the trees, before the first glimpse of bright blue water appears below.

This hidden treasure is Porthchapel Beach, a small bay tucked between Porthcurno and Porthgwarra, close to the famous Minack Theatre.

With soft golden sand, dramatic granite cliffs and clear turquoise water, it offers a calmer alternative to Cornwall’s busier beaches.

The sense of seclusion does come with a price. The path down is steep and narrow in parts, making it unsuitable for those with limited mobility.

For many visitors, though, the challenge makes the experience even more rewarding.

One reviewer on TripAdvisor described it as a “beautiful, peaceful and sheltered beach, well worth the effort of getting there,” according to the Express.

The cove remains wild and natural, with no facilities or lifeguards. This means visitors need to bring everything with them, from food and drinks to beach gear.

Those who are ready for the climb down will find a spot that feels almost private, especially outside of the busy summer season.

Swimmers love the calm, clear waters, while children enjoy exploring the rock pools and caves around the edges of the bay.

As one visitor put it, being there was “like stepping back in time to the Cornwall of old – quiet, rugged, and breathtakingly beautiful.”

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
