It is no surprise that this village has been named the most beautiful in Britain, with its peaceful setting and close links to some of the country’s best beaches.
Hidden away in South Devon, this village is a true gem, full of countryside charm, historic character and easy access to the region’s stunning coastline.
CN Traveller named it Britain’s most beautiful village in 2023, praising its calm and quiet atmosphere as feeling like “another world” compared with nearby Salcombe, just a couple of miles down the water.
The village has become increasingly popular online thanks to the incredible beaches close by. Bantham Beach, only a half-hour drive away, has even been described by one visitor as “the most beautiful beach without leaving the UK.”
Some locals, however, would rather keep South Pool under wraps. One resident jokingly said: “Shhh, don’t tell anyone! We want to keep it a secret!”, according to Devon Live.
South Pool has all the features of a classic English village, with winding narrow lanes and old stone cottages that look like something from a postcard.
One of its most important landmarks is the Church of St Cyriac and St Julietta, a Grade I listed building that dates back to the 13th century.
The church is admired for its medieval design, complete with a Norman font and a detailed wooden rood screen that has stood for centuries.
At the heart of the community is The Millbrook Inn, the village pub, which is well known for its warm welcome and wide selection of local ales and ciders.
Inside, the inn is full of charm, with wooden beams and open fires that make it a cosy spot to enjoy a meal or a drink for both locals and visitors.
Located at the head of South Pool creek, which connects to the Salcombe Estuary, the village is also a great base for outdoor activities like sailing, kayaking and fishing.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
