A “beautiful” UK beach has been called a “hidden gem” because the only way to reach it is through a secret tunnel.
Anyone who discovers this hidden gem in Shaldon, near Exeter, is treated to a breathtaking sight.
Often described as one of Devon’s best-kept secrets, the cove can only be reached through a narrow opening in the rocky cliff.
The twisting tunnel is believed to have been used by smugglers in the 18th and 19th centuries to move goods from boats into the village, reports the Mirror.
With just a string of lights overhead, the five-minute walk is described by visitors as an experience in itself.
To reach Ness Cove, you must tackle 86 steps, but the effort is rewarded with a peaceful beach of soft red sand.
The cliffs shelter the bay from the wind, and the noise of nearby traffic is completely hidden, adding to the sense of escape.
One reviewer on TripAdvisor wrote that the cove is “a hidden gem.” They said: “The tunnel is the only way in.
I felt a little nervous at first, but it was well lit and manageable, although we were out of breath climbing the 86 steps.”
They added: “When you step out of the tunnel you find a stunning, quiet cove with streams running from the cliffs and gentle waves rolling in from the sea.”
Another visitor said: “The short walk through the tunnel is its own little adventure, but it is absolutely worth it for the views.
The beach is tucked between two cliffs and is far quieter than the busier tourist beaches nearby.”
