Stunning coastal walk with wild goats and dramatic scenery hailed a hidden gem

This coastal walk is breathtaking, with wild scenery and one of the most unique natural wonders in the UK.

Hidden along the coastline of Exmoor National Park lies this hidden gem, a spectacular spot on Devon’s South West Coast Path.

This dramatic valley has inspired famous poets for centuries, including Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth, and possibly Percy Bysshe Shelley, who once visited the nearby village of Lynmouth.

Formed during the last ice age, the valley has fascinated visitors for thousands of years. Archaeological finds suggest people lived and farmed here over 3,500 years ago. Local legends even tell of giants once calling the Valley of the Rocks their home.

Its sweeping coastal views, towering cliffs, and jagged stone peaks give the area a magical, otherworldly feel. One of the most striking landmarks is Castle Rock, a dramatic peak perched on the cliff edge.

Walkers are often joined by wild goats along the trail, as goats have grazed here for centuries. These hardy animals were even mentioned in the Domesday Book, compiled for William the Conqueror back in 1086.

The main Valley of the Rocks walk is just one mile long, making it ideal for a short stroll, but it can be extended along the South West Coast Path. Visitors can also continue on foot to the nearby towns of Lynton or Lynmouth.

TripAdvisor reviewers have praised the valley as one of Devon’s most stunning walks. One visitor wrote: “We came on a cold, windy day, but the climb to the top was worth it for the incredible views. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking.”

Another added: “Amazing place to explore. We hiked from Lynton, then back around the South West Coast Path to Lynmouth. The landscape is stunning, with feral goats, sheer drops and dramatic views.”

One reviewer also gave a helpful tip: “If possible, approach on foot from the woodland path from Lynton instead of along the road. You’ll arrive looking down into the valley, and the views are unforgettable. Driving and parking puts you inside the valley, so you miss the magical first impression.”

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
