Warning issued to anyone planning a trip to UK beaches this summer

After seeing a frightening incident, a woman has shared an urgent warning for anyone planning to visit a UK beach between June and September.

If you’re heading to the seaside in the summer, a mum says her advice should be taken seriously and acted on quickly.

Danielle Manton-Kelly, who goes by The Enchanted Nanny on social media, explained that the warning applies to all beachgoers between June and September.

In a TikTok video she revealed: “We have these things called weever fish and I’m making this video because my best friend’s brother has just been stung by one.”

She explained that the small fish can survive for some time on land and are hard to spot in the sand. “He stood on one barefoot and usually that would give a nasty sting where you’d need to use the hottest water possible to stop the venom spreading and causing pain,” she said.

But in this case her friend’s brother didn’t make it that far.

He suffered a severe allergic reaction and had to be rushed to hospital for emergency treatment. “It’s been really scary and a huge shock,” Danielle admitted.

She added: “Weever fish are very common on UK beaches, so if you’re heading to the coast always wear beach shoes like flip flops or jelly shoes.” Danielle also urged parents to be extra careful with their children. “Don’t let them walk by the sea with bare feet – it’s just not worth the risk,” she warned.

Danielle finished by saying: “You won’t see them easily because they’re so camouflaged. Just be cautious – it’s not worth taking chances.”

A former lifeguard later backed up her warning, saying they had seen many people injured by weever fish while on duty. “I lost count of the number of people who ignored the signs saying, ‘Weever Fish! Warning! Please wear beach or swim shoes!’” they said.

They added: “I had to deal with screaming children, even toddlers, in agony because parents wouldn’t listen and refused to put shoes on their kids. We even gave them out for free but some people said they ‘didn’t look nice’. It was heartbreaking seeing children suffer like that.”

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
