Surrey has plenty of pretty villages and lively market towns, but one tiny spot stands out because of its peaceful setting and tucked away location.
This hidden gem is a quiet hamlet just outside Abinger Hammer, south of Dorking and east of Guildford, and it feels like a true countryside escape.
Surrounded by thick woodland, this calm corner sits on the gentle slopes of Leith Hill and can be reached by narrow country lanes off the A25. It is encircled by National Trust land, including Leith Hill, Abinger Roughs and Netley Park.
The River Tillingbourne flows through the hamlet, and a small footbridge crosses one of its streams, tempting walkers to explore this lovely beauty spot.
The centre of the area is the Friday Street car park, which makes a handy starting point for discovering the Surrey countryside.
One popular route here is the Friday Street and Wotton Common Circular walk. It is an enjoyable trail that also offers the option of climbing Leith Hill.
The route is usually described as moderately challenging and takes around three hours and 26 minutes to complete.
It is well loved by bird watchers, hikers and mountain bikers, although you can still find quiet moments if you visit at less busy times. The path is open all year and looks beautiful in every season.
This circular walk offers a mix of scenery and things to see along the way. The paths are clearly signposted, with markers at each junction.
One of the highlights is the stretch past open farmland, where you may spot pigs and chickens in the fields beside the path. The River Tillingbourne runs close by, adding to the peaceful countryside feel.
Close to Friday Street you will also find Wotton House Hotel, whose grounds reach towards the hamlet. It is a popular wedding venue, known for its gardens, fountains and a charming waterfall.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
